Text or Phone call? Good Question!

To get a quick message to the school, many times a text message to a staff person seems the easiest.  A phone call to the school office, on the other hand, makes sure the message goes directly to the person that needs to know that information.  When it comes to “should I text or call?” we encourage a call to the school office. The staff person to whom a text is sent may not be in a good position to get the message where it needs to go.  Our volunteers in the school office can get the message where it needs to go.

**For messages that need to get to the school regarding late arrival, appointments, pickup, after school care, etc., we do request that you call the school office.  Please call 309-449-3346 for the school office! Our volunteer secretary is ready to receive your call.

From the Principal's Desk

“Out of the overflow of the heart, the mouth speaks.”  What a reminder to us that our first goal, in ministering to and raising our children, is to reach their heart.  My desire, as a parent and a Christian educator, is that we would help to encourage a heart that is tuned in to our Savior, and therefore cares for and loves others.  This helps give us a heavenly perspective!

In Christ,

Mr. Horning

I was challenged at a recent Bible Study to pray Luke 10:2… “...Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into His harvest field.”  As I begin to pray earnestly for this, I encourage you, CLA families, to do the same. We are a part of the workers, but are we truly going out? Let’s GO!  We want all to know the saving grace of Jesus. Pray that we are sent, and that we respond to the sending.

In Christ,

Mr. Horning

CLA Lions Baseball Game

Generally, we don’t post sports updates here.  That’s because our athletics are not really about “winning” as much as they are about competing well and for the Lord.  But a recent game (Tuesday) for our baseball team is worth noting. The game was against Delavan JH, a team with whom many of our players share summer baseball experiences. And also a team that had won 9 games and lost only 1 prior to our game with them.  The competition was strong. The boys played well, and it was a very close game… and the CLA Lions ended up losing, in extra innings, 10-8. But the character of the boys (on both teams) was evident. What a wonderful game to watch. Thank you, Lions Baseball team, for showing that you can win on God’s scoreboard, even if the results say it was a loss.  Well done!

I would just like to share two verses with you that had a great impact on my week this week… I hope they will also bless you! The Lord gives us the words we need each day:

“The name of the Lord is a fortified tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.” - Proverbs 18:10

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” - Romans 15:13

They may be brought to school next Friday between 1:00-5:00pm.  Cookies and such should be individually wrapped. Pies should be brought whole and should not need refrigeration. Middle school/high school students can earn community service time for contributing (details were sent in an email).  We also need 3 students to help on the day of the sale, Saturday 9/14 from 10:00-1:00. Please contact Mrs. Gibson at 309-826-1848 or [email protected].  Thank you!

From the Principal's Desk

Do you pray daily for your children, their teachers, and their classmates? I would encourage this to become a part of your day.  We know that God has a great plan in store for us, and agreeing in prayer for His plan to be fulfilled helps us to remember that He’s in control!

In Christ,

Mr. Horning

Well done, everyone, on the first two weeks of school!

We are off to a great start with procedures such as lunch money, tuition payments, drop off and pick up of students, and so many other “beginning of school year” items that students, parents and staff are learning together!  If you have any questions about procedures, please don’t hesitate to ask!

From the Principal's Desk

As you have read in previous Lion Tales, our theme to start off the year is about how God is calling us and we are being “sent” to serve the Lord, right here where we are!  This week’s focus is knowing that God has a plan for us, and Jeremiah 29 tells us that He has a great plan! I was blessed this week in conversations with our teachers - a group who meets before school for prayer. We usually share a verse or a devotional that is meaningful to us.  Romans 12:12 reminds us to be “joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.” For us, that’s the plan God has for right here, right now! How great to share and live that plan with one another.

In Christ,

Mr. Horning

Drop-off and Pick-up

NOTE:  Please be sure to enter on the SOUTH drive (closest to the medical complex doctor offices) when you come for drop-off and pick-up each day. Follow the curve, pull up as far as you are able (not past the 4-square painted on the drive).  Be safe and drive slowly when in the school lot and driveway!

At Pick-up time, please make sure you have your “authorized” car sign visible for staff to identify your car so that your children can be safely picked up!  Questions, check with the office!

FROM THE SCHOOL OFFICE….

Lunch Money, Office Mail, and more details...

Any items that eventually are handled by the school office (lunch money, tuition payments, notes, etc.) should be sent with your children in their backpack/folder in the morning. This is the most efficient way to get items to the school office, as each class sends items to the office every day. Please be sure envelopes are CLEARLY labeled so that they will get to the correct location. If you would prefer to deliver it yourself, please place items, clearly marked, in the tray on the corner of the secretary's desk.  Lunch menus were available at registration and back to school night, but if you need August and September menus, please contact the office and we can send them home. Lunch menus are also online at www.clacademy.org.

Student/Parent Handbooks

If you did not get one at back-to-school night or on the first day of school, please check with the school office.  Please read the handbook, sign and return the last page.

Volunteers needed - for regular weekly shifts

We appreciate parents helping in many ways.  Here are several specifics for this fall:

Office Volunteers have a regular ½ day or full day shift and are responsible for answering phones and doing miscellaneous tasks to assist Mr. Horning, Mrs. Horning, and the other staff.  A few regular shifts as well as fill-in/substitutes are needed.

Lunchroom Volunteers help to prepare and serve lunch as well as clean-up after lunch. We currently have regular helpers on all days needed, but would gladly encourage more help or individuals willing to fill in.

Recess Monitors for various recess times are helpful to assist staff who operate these recesses.

If you are able to commit to a regular volunteer opportunity, please contact the office!!!

Before and After School Care... Reminders!

We are glad to offer before school care to our families who are in need of this service.  Day care opens at 7:30 am. It appears that we may have a large number of students needing this, so please remember this is specifically for those needing the service due to parent work responsibilities. We know it is fun to come and play before school starts, but we are only able to accommodate 20 or less students.   If you are able to use the regular 8:15-8:30 drop off time, please do so!

After school care is an opportunity we offer for our enrolled families, but we must also be careful on the numbers of students that are in daycare.  Please read the following information carefully! If you have questions, please talk with Mr. Horning.

  • From 3:30 to 4:00 after school care is at no charge, but students MUST be enrolled ahead of time. This means that we must have a prior schedule for each day that the student will be coming to daycare. We are NOT having a simple “drop in” list, so please be sure that if your child needs to stay in aftercare, that the school is informed ahead of time!

  • Any student who needs to utilize daycare without being on the enrollment list for that particular day, there will be a $3 charge.  A phone call or note to enroll the student for that day MUST be done BY NOON to avoid this charge.

  • Students who remain at daycare after 4:00 will have the following fee schedule:

Pickup prior to 4:30, $2 per child. Pickup after 4:30, $7 per child. Daycare closes at 5:30.

From the Principal's Desk

We’ve had a great “running start” to the school year!  Students, teachers, parents - we are all learning and working together on procedures and how things operate.  Each year there are a few changes, and it will take some time for routines to be set. Remember, we are all in this together… working side-by-side!  If you have questions, concerns, comments, or encouragements, please let us know!

In Christ,

Mr. Horning

From the Principal's Desk

Welcome!  To start the school year, we will be focusing on the theme “Prepare to be Sent.”  The theme verse, Isaiah 6:8, reminds us to answer “Here I am” to God’s request of “whom shall I send?”  We introduced in chapel this morning the call/response (below) to help the students understand how God is calling us to be a light for HIM exactly where we are at in the moment.

Who? ---- “ME!”             Where? ---- “HERE!”

I am hopeful that together this year we will impact each of our students for the Kingdom, as well as some great reading, writing and other academic pursuits.  May this be a wonderful year!

In Christ,

Mr. Horning
